Day 1 Panel
with David Callahan, Steve Holmberg and Jenny Karn
Trail running's growth story is well documented. But growth alone does not explain where the sport is headed. This panel goes beyond the headlines to examine what is driving participation, where cracks are forming, and what comes next for event organizers, brands, and athletes.

The Current State of Anti-Doping in Trail Running
Day 1 Panel
with moderator Tim Tollefson and special panelist Travis Tygart
Trail running is growing faster than ever — and with that momentum comes the opportunity to build the sport the right way. As other sports have learned, embracing anti-doping standards early is a sign of maturity and strength. As the sport explodes in popularity, the topic of doping — long whispered about, rarely addressed head-on like in other sports — demands a seat at the table.

The Great Debate:
Should Trail Running Be an Olympic Sport?
Day 1 Panel

The Olympics have come for triathlon, sport climbing, and skateboarding. Could trail running be next — and more importantly, should it be?

Ahead of His Time:
A Conversation with Matt Carpenter
Day 1 Panel
Scott Jurek with Matt Carpenter
Before the sport had a professional class, before GPS watches and carbon-plated shoes, before trail running was a global industry — Matt Carpenter was setting records that still stand today. Training at altitude in Manitou Springs, competing across disciplines and distances that most runners wouldn't dare combine, Carpenter operated in a category largely of his own making. Decades later, the sport is still catching up.

ACG Ultrafly 2 & Zegama Trail Shoe Demo
Activation Day 2
Lace up and hit the trail. Stop by the ACG booth to demo two of the most talked-about trail shoes of the season — the Ultrafly 2 and the Zegama 2.
Nike ACG Ultrafly 2 · The Race Weapon Thirteen rounds of testing. Thirty thousand miles of development. The Ultrafly 2 is Nike's most serious trail shoe ever built — and it has the results to back it up. Caleb Olson won the 2025 Western States 100 in a prototype of this shoe, in the second-fastest time in history. ZoomX foam — Nike's lightest, softest, and most responsive — delivers 85% energy return, and a split carbon FlyPlate keeps it from feeling rigid on technical terrain, flexing over roots and rocks while still generating serious propulsion. A true trail super shoe that surprises — lighter, more stable, and more trail-friendly than its predecessor. Nike Zegama 2 · The Workhorse Where the Ultrafly is built to race, the Zegama 2 is built to go all day. ZoomX foam, a Vibram Megagrip outsole with wide-spaced lugs for self-cleaning across mixed terrain, and an upgraded upper built for ventilation and durability — this is the shoe for runners who want plush, reliable miles without babying their footwear. One of the best trail shoes on the market right now for cushioned, premium performance on easy to moderate terrain.

Lowa Skyterra & Fortux Trail Shoe Demo
Activation Day 2
The Skyterra is Lowa's statement shoe for runners who want trail protection without sacrificing legitimate performance underfoot - and you can try it at TrailCon. Built around a synthetic mesh upper, a supercritical DynaType midsole, and a Vibram Megagrip outsole with 4.5mm lugs, it arrives with a 33mm heel stack and 6mm drop — numbers that put it firmly in the long-distance, technical-terrain category. Best for: runners doing high-mileage days on rough terrain who'd rather have too much shoe than not enough. If you're leaning towards ultramarathons, long-distance efforts, and fast hiking on varied terrain, the Lowa Fortux is your shoe - and can also be tried out at TrailCon. A smooth rocker provides a natural rolling motion, while padded uppers and a cushioned midsole prioritize comfort across extended miles. Bi-directional lugs deliver targeted grip on acceleration and braking, which makes it a capable shoe across a range of trail conditions without feeling specialized to the point of limitation.

Brooks Cascadia Elite Trail Shoe Demo
Activation Day 2
Stop by the Brooks booth to demo the all-new Cascadia Elite and put it to the test on real trail.
The Cascadia line has been a fixture in trail running for nearly two decades — 19 iterations deep, trusted by thru-hikers, mountain runners, and Brooks elites alike. The Cascadia Elite is a different animal. It takes the mountain DNA of the flagship Cascadia and merges it with the trimmings of a modern, high-performance race-ready design — max cushioning, serious energy return, and traction that flat-out grips.
Forty millimeters of heel cushioning with a Pebax plate underneath — the ride is plush but never mushy, and just as comfortable grinding up a long climb at hiking pace as it is moving fast across runnable terrain. The Vibram Megagrip Elite compound is even stickier than standard Megagrip — especially notable on the rock slabs you'll find all over Palisades this week. A sock-like upper wraps the foot snugly and eliminates the shifting you sometimes get with traditional tongue designs, with a Kevlar-reinforced Matryx upper that holds up over serious mileage.
The Brooks team is here to guide the fit and talk through what makes this one different.

Activation Day 2
This Running Minds is co-created with Truckee Trails Foundation, and Western States Foundation.
We’ll hear from people involved in trail work about what it takes to keep these routes maintained and accessible, and how every user’s behaviour can either help or harm these landscapes. We’ll also talk about why protecting and defending public lands matters for the future of these ecosystems and its communities, and how events like Western States depend on long-term stewardship and community care for the terrain they cross. This is not a race and there is no timing.
The aim is to move together at a conversational pace, listen, ask questions and leave with a clearer picture of the work happening behind the scenes on the trails we love. People will be able to demo NNormal shoes as part of the run.

The Brooks team is here to guide the fit and talk through what makes this one different.
